OctPoWriMo #21 – The End of the World and Everything In It

June Carter sang me a song today…

Some day the flood is coming
To wipe us from this land
Things have gone downhill
It’s all got out of hand

No power on earth can stop it
It’s all too late for that
No point tryin’ to fight it
So go and hug your cat

And when those raindrops start to fall
Greet them with a smile
Go and hug your cat goodbye and
Greet. Them. With. A. Smile.

As the water starts to rise
And wash away your stuff
Don’t waste time in doubting,
Have I done enough?

There’s time for one last email
And maybe then a tweet
To say goodbye to this old world
This time you got me beat

So when those raindrops start to fall
Greet them with a smile
Go and hug your cat goodbye and
Greet. Them. With. A. Smile.

Well that water’s rising really fast
Your defences overwhelmed
No point looking round for help
It’s the same across the realm

As the water pulls you under
There’s no time for regrets
Just hope that you go quickly,
Cuz that’s as good as it gets

So when those raindrops start to fall
Greet them with a smile
Go and hug your cat goodbye and
Greet. Them. With. A.
Smile.

  1. The cat wishes to not be hugged at this time… That being said, I can hear you and Miss. June belting this out! Are you singing bass to her tenor?

  2. Sooo… are you saying I should have hugged that cat? I like your poem, though I didn’t feel like hugging any cat much last night.
Well, at least it wasn’t raining 😉

  3. Hi! I wanted to sing this poem, it’s so mellifluous! Luckily every time we see a rainbow we’re reminded that there will not be another flood of apocalyptic scale. That said, loved the line, ‘Go and hug your cat goodbye’. Aw.

    1. I’m a big Johnny Cash fan, but that’s about my limit. My wife loves the TV show Nashville. I can’t say I’m a fan… either of the show, or the type of country music represented!

(My wife’s sister is a huge country fan – she says it’s a growing scene over here 🙂 )

      1. I would imagine so. My mother and one of my sister’s love country. I like old country like Hank Williams,Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, etc. But I’ve never really been into it either. LOL

        1. I want When The Man Comes Around played at my funeral… possibly followed by the full ten-minute version of Freebird, just to make everyone stand around awkwardly going “can we go yet?”

          1. Rofl! That’s awesome!
I plan on being cremated and letting people rock out to whatever they want. Especially since I’ll be dead and won’t give a damn because people will do whatever they want anyway. LoL
