Beware the Chocolate Spiders! (poem)

Beware! Beware! Beware!
The haunting time of year!

When chocolate spiders hatch,
Spreading candy fear!

You may think that’s just a costume,
A Halloween disguise

But take a second look:
Count that creature’s eyes!

Don’t think of trick OR treat:
To them it’s all the same!

Weaving caramel webs
AroundΒ your window frame…

Lurking in the darkness…
Hiding out of sight…

Then dropping down in front of you
Giving you a FRIGHT!

You yelp and drop your candy;
Sprint off down the street

Those spiders give a cackle
And eat up every treat!

Beware! Beware! Beware!
The chocolate spider scare!

This was written for Susanna Leonard Hill’s Halloween challenge – write a 100 word Halloween story appropriate for children (title not included in the 100 words), using the words costume, dark, and haunt. Your story can be scary, funny or anything in between, poetry or prose, but it will only count for the contest if it includes those 3 words and is 100 words (you can go under, but not over!) Get it? Halloweensie – because it’s not very long and it’s for little people πŸ™‚Β

  1. Oooh. You’re going to have me taking a second look at all my chocolate. Every time I eat it now my skin will crawl. Nicely done. Good luck.

  2. Caramel webs! YUM! This is really cool… It should be on a scroll so we can hand it out to all the wee beggars this coming weekend.

      1. Please, don’t give my sister any ideas… She has been trying to convince me to dress up for the “free candy day” for years now… *rolling eyes*

  3. My husband once ate chocolate covered ants when he was a kid…an uncle was in the Merchant Marines and brought him a box, but didn’t tell him what they were. πŸ˜‰
Very cute poem, Al…I’m a chocolate lover…so now I’m going to have to be looking very carefully before I pop those candies in my mouth. πŸ˜‰

  4. Thanks Al, I wondered what those freaky jumping spiders wanted. Maybe I can entice them back outside with a line of chocolate! Fun poem, good luck.

  5. So funny!! Another great story in rhyme. Another great one for giving Susanna a scare of how she is ever going to figure out the judging.

I loved this story along with the others I have read. We in this kidlit community are great! Don’t let me scare you off. πŸ™‚

  6. I love this! It’s spooky, and the language is both fun and lyrical! “Weaving caramel webs around your window frame” is such a delicious line. I also love the repetition of “beware” and the last line. Nicely done!
